New fuel economy labels unveiledPosted On Thu, May 26, 2011
As more people purchase fuel-efficient cars to save money on gas, some people may be confused about which cars get the most mileage without asking a car enthusiast or automotive dealer for assistance. Help may be on the way, however, as these vehicles will have more informative labels on them in the not-too-distant future.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency, new fuel economy labels will be featured on gas-sipping models, allowing buyers to gain a better understanding of the benefits they'll have now and down the road.
Lisa Jackson, administrator for the EPA, credited President Barack Obama for the new labeling system.
"President Obama's work to shape a Clean Cars program is fostering a marketplace of cutting-edge American vehicles that are more fuel efficient than ever before," said Jackson. "The EPA and DOT are creating a new generation of fuel economy labels to meet the needs of a new generation of innovative cars."
Estimated fuel costs, the vehicle's environmental impact and savings will be among the things listed on the new labels.
Speaking of savings, auto insurance companies may provide a discounted rate for people insuring a fuel-efficient model.
