New baby can mean new auto insurance needsPosted On Tue, August 4, 2009
A new baby requires many adjustments - some of which can involve auto insurance coverage.
This week, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) reminded families with young children that their insurance needs can often change when a new baby arrives.
When it comes to auto insurance, the NAIC cites two specific cases where a new baby would help change a family's insurance needs.
First, parents who are planning on participating in carpooling or who otherwise expect to regularly be transporting children should examine their existing liability coverage. In such circumstances, increased coverage could be advisable.
Second, families often get a larger vehicle, such as an SUV or minivan when they have small children to transport. However, a new or different vehicle also usually means a change in auto insurance premiums.
Another thing that families can remember is that if they plan to be driving less in the foreseeable future, they should check with their insurance company to see if any low mileage discounts or other deals are available.
