Nebraska latest recipient of FEMA aid

Posted On Mon, April 26, 2010

Storms ravaged a significant portion of the country during March, and Nebraska is one of the latest states to receive aid from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The federal aid will supplement Nebraska's statewide and local recovery efforts. The state was hard-hit from March 6 to April 3 with flooding, ice jams, and severe storms. The funding will be made available on a cost-sharing basis across the state for all Native American tribes and counties. Select non-profit organizations will also be eligible for funding that will contribute to the emergency work and repair.

Home insurance doesn't always cover natural disasters, such as severe storms and flooding. Homeowners should carefully review their insurance policies to see if their coverage includes protection against region-specific damage. If not, separate coverage may need to be purchased.

The National Flood Insurance Program was recently reinstated. Over 1,400 homes were unable to purchase flood insurance until Congress agreed to extend the program. The program began in 1968 and provides the majority of flood insurance for Americans.ADNFCR-2297-ID-19743127-ADNFCR
