Nearly 250 tornadoes formed over three-day period

Posted On Mon, April 18, 2011

The middle of April has been a wild ride for many homeowners as a spat of tornadoes has leveled properties along the Atlantic Coast and into the Midwest.

In 14 states over a three-day period, AccuWeather reports that 241 tornadoes touched down, making it the largest twister outbreak in recorded history.

In North Carolina alone, dozens of injuries and deaths have been reported as Raleigh - the capital and second largest city of the state - was hammered by torrential downpours and whipping winds. says a combination of climatic factors has led to the increased tornado activity.

"The strong La Nina pattern means that tremendous contrasts in air masses, with cool and dry air to the north and warm and steamy air to the south, are occurring over the Mississippi Valley," said Henry Marguisty, senior meteorologist for

Marguisty went on to say the last time the country has seen since so many twisters in so short a period of time was in 1974, when 148 formed over a two-day period.

Standard home insurance policies usually offer coverage for tornado damage which, the Insurance Information Institute says, tends to be the most significant in the spring.
