Nationwide policyholder information could be compromisedPosted On Tue, December 18, 2012
Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. recently released a statement notifying consumers that the provider's computer network had been attacked, putting the personal information of its policyholders at risk.
According to Insurance Journal, the large insurance provider suffered a data breach that compromised the information of 1.1 million people.
The insurer confirmed that the compromised information included policyholders' names, Social Security numbers, birth dates and license numbers. Nationwide has contacted its consumers and offered them free credit and identity theft monitoring for one year.
Although affected consumers may be upset about their compromised information, they could be in line to receive reduced insurance rates if the company's security was deemed negligent or insufficient.
