Motorists should keep insurance in mind before handing off their car keys

Posted On Tue, January 4, 2011

Car owners may want to think twice before simply forking over their vehicle keys to a valet attendant.

There are many things that could go wrong when another person is left in possession of a motor vehicle that isn't their own, even for a short period of time. Automotive website offers advice on how to treat a valet attendant to help ensure a vehicle is taken care of.

The website says it's important to also be aware of where the vehicle will be stored. If on the street, according to, an unfed parking meter can legally become the car owner's problem.

Also, car owners should obtain a written report from a valet manager should any damage be found. senior consumer advice editor Philip Reed offers a bit of advice for motorists dealing with valet attendants.

"By and large, the golden rule seems to apply. Treat the valet as you wish your car to be treated," says Reed.

It's important for consumers to check their car insurance policy to determine what kind of damage will be reimbursable should an incident occur at the hands of a valet attendant. While coverage rates may seem high, they are typically less expensive than out-of-pocket costs to repair damage.
