More than 1,000 health insurance waivers issuedPosted On Mon, March 7, 2011
The portion of President Obama's healthcare law requiring people to purchase health insurance won't go into effect until 2014, but portions of that legislation won't affect organizations given a waiver. And according to a D.C.-based newspaper, more than 1,000 waivers have been released.
The Hill reports that the Department of Health and Human Services issued 126 new waivers last Friday, bringing the total number of organizations that will be granted exceptions to the healthcare law mandate to 1,040.
HHS tells the paper that the waivers have been issued mainly to companies that aren't able to meet the minimum levels of coverage for their employees, which has been set at a floor of $750,000. Critics of the insurance plan bristle at the notion, telling the paper that the waivers have mainly been issued to unions that support the Obama administration.
States opposing the Affordable Health Care Act have received the bulk of the attention in media reports, but according to Congressional Quarterly, there are several states supportive of the healthcare overhaul, including New Mexico, Rhode Island, Maryland, Massachusetts and California.
