More policies needed in battle against cancerPosted On Wed, July 28, 2010
Despite the major headway made in cancer research and treatment, work still needs to be done. A report released by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network says that many states need to do more to establish policies to ensure adequate care.
According to the report, 23 states have met none or only one of the established benchmarks of effective legislation focusing on preventative programs for certain types of cancer and tobacco use. The report says that no state has successfully reached all six benchmarks. Hawaii, however, has come the closest, reaching five.
"In the best interests of their constituents, state legislators should support laws and policies that help people fight cancer by emphasizing disease prevention, making health care affordable and accessible and focusing on patient-centered care during and after treatment," say ACS CAN president Christopher Hansen.
Under the Affordable Care Act, new health insurance plans will be required to provide preventive care screenings free of charge. The new requirement could potentially save the health care system money in the long run with people ultimately living healthier lives.
