More health record improvement needed, says U of M report

Posted On Thu, February 9, 2012

A recent report from the University of Michigan called for government healthcare providers to improve their electronic recordkeeping in order to improve care streamlining.

The report, which was released in the February edition of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, showed that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have issues with a separation of electronic general healthcare information and immunization histories.

"This broad electronic health record adoption across the country is falling short of its potential to ensure that health care providers have a complete immunization history for every child, including vaccines given at other locations," said Dr. Kevin Dombkowski, research associate professor at the University of Michigan and co-author of the report.

The process currently can complicate doctors' jobs, as they have to use both databases to be sure a person hasn't received an immunization, the report added. This could lead to a large amount of inefficiency in the healthcare process.

If a person thinks that their current government-sponsored healthcare plan doesn't give them what they need, it could be a better option to compare health insurance quotes.
