More Americans purchasing smaller, fuel-efficient vehicles

Posted On Thu, March 1, 2012

AutoTrader.com showed in a report that more consumers were purchasing compact cars during January, as gas prices increased to approximately $3.40 per gallon nationwide.

The New Car Insights Report showed that close to half of the highest selling vehicles during January were compact cars, while another two were hybrids. The Buick Verano witnessed the largest increase of any vehicle, as consumer interest rose by nearly 96 percent. The Subaru Impreza witnessed an increase of approximately 40 percent, while the Toyota Prius had a nearly identical figure. The Corolla and Yaris, both compact cars made by Toyota, witnessed interest jumped by roughly 20 percent each.

"Gas prices have been on the minds of shoppers lately, and our most recent tracking study showed that 54 percent of consumers said their vehicle choice was affected by this issue," said Rick Wainschel, vice president of automotive insights at AutoTrader.com.

While it is smart to try to save money in every aspect of life, consumers can also do this when it comes to auto insurance. Finding inexpensive auto insurance rates may help lower bills in the long run.
