More Americans go without health insurancePosted On Thu, September 16, 2010
The number of Americans without health insurance has dropped to its lowest level since 1987, when the U.S. Census Bureau began collecting the data.. Last year 253.6 million people had health insurance, a decrease of 1.5 million from the previous year.
According to the data, certain segments of the population are more likely to be insured than others. Those who are foreign-born, for example, are almost two-and-a-half times more likely to be uninsured than those born in the country. Additionally, those in the Northeast were found to be most likely to have health insurance.
Being aware of such differences in coverage levels is important for several reasons. The data shows that some segments of the population are not getting the health insurance coverage they need for one reason or another. Initiatives to reach such groups can help make sure they get the care they need.
If people put off getting healthcare because of costs their condition may become worse. As a condition progresses, the treatment and overall patient prognosis can be costly. Proper and timely treatment, however, can result in positive and cost-effective outcomes.
