Moped use on the rise in South CarolinaPosted On Mon, April 4, 2011
In South Carolina, an alternative mode of travel is becoming more and more popular: the moped.
According to the Charleston Post and Courier, many South Carolinians are keeping their cars at home and buying mopeds because they're cheaper, get good mileage and don't require insurance.
In an interview with the paper, George Merriweather, who owns Moped Medic in Charleston, said sales have been swift.
"Business is a lot better than we anticipated," Merriweather said. "It's just really taking off."
Not everyone's excited about the sales surge of the moped, however, as motorists tell the paper they get "annoyed" when they get stuck behind one in traffic.
"It's like the people on them are in the Twilight Zone," said motorist Albert Robinson in an interview with the paper. "The dart out in front of you … and you can't get around them."
Unlike auto insurance, moped insurance is not required in all states, but people may want to consider buying some as moped accidents and fatalities are on the increase. Statistics collected by USA Today from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicate fatalities involving mopeds doubled between 2005 and 2009.
