Mississippi plans to crack down on uninsured drivers

Posted On Wed, March 7, 2012

The state of Mississippi recently announced plans to take extra measured to fight against uninsured drivers, according to The Associated Press.

Extra checks would involve computer verification systems that would point out consumers who were without insurance. The state has one of the highest rates of uninsured motorists in the United States, according to the news source. A similar piece of legislation was vetoed by the governor in 2011.

Many people are able to cheat the system, and some are suggesting high fines to discourage this and encourage consumers to pay for their auto insurance plans instead, the news source said.

"People buy the insurance, let it lapse after a month, and they still have the card for five more months," said Gary Chism, Mississippi state senator and chairman of the House Insurance Committee, according to the news source.

Those who are without auto insurance because they don't think they can afford it may want to look online for less expensive options. There are many auto insurance rates available that could be more affordable than what a person has seen in the past.
