Millions of Americans are without dental insurancePosted On Mon, June 21, 2010
While many have placed a sharper focus on those without health insurance in the last few months, the number of Americans who go without dental insurance numbers in the tens of millions.
There are about 45 million Americans under the age of 65 with private health insurance that do not also have dental insurance, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control. That number accounts for about 26 percent of the 172 million people across the country who qualified for the study.
The report also found that roughly eight out of every 10 people with health insurance from their employer had dental insurance as well, and about three out of 10 had to pay for it out of pocket.
Demographically, approximately 40 percent of those that did not graduate from high school lack dental coverage, and non-Hispanic black people were more likely to have dental insurance than non-Hispanic white, Asian or Hispanic people.
A Reuters report added that 90 million Americans over 65 get health insurance through Medicare but that those plans do not cover dental care.
