Midwest experiencing minor earthquakes

Posted On Tue, April 13, 2010

Residents of the Midwest are no strangers to earthquakes this year.

Insurance Journal reports that Oklahoma has already experienced 47 earthquakes since the beginning of the year. On April 8, Oklahoma felt the effects of a 3.2-magnitude earthquake, Insurance Journal said.

If this sounds like a lot, it's not. Don Steeples, Kansas University's McGee distinguished professor of applied geophysics and senior vice provost for scholarly support, told the Kansas City Info Zine that thousands of earthquakes with magnitudes of 3 or 4 occur yearly and that there are more than a million that are hardly ever detected by humans.

Recent earthquakes in Haiti, Chile, California, Mexico, and Indonesia have brought more awareness of the destruction they can cause to the public. Steeples told the Kansas City Info Zine that Midwest residents shouldn't fret over earthquakes. "I tend to have more concerns about the economy than immediate worries about an earthquake in New Madrid," Steeples said.

According to the Kansas City Info Zine, there are somewhere between 15 and 20 7-magnitude or higher earthquakes that happen throughout the world in a year.ADNFCR-2297-ID-19719412-ADNFCR
