Men need to be mindful about skin cancerPosted On Wed, August 18, 2010
Summer months bring many people outdoors to soak in the sun's warm rays. Many media messages target women to remind them of the dangers tanning can bring. However, men should also be reminded that they can get skin cancer if they aren't mindful of the time they spend in the sun.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that over 5,000 men died in 2006 from melanoma. Wearing sunscreen and avoiding excessive exposure to the sun are recommended by experts to help reduce one's chances of developing skin cancer.
Jafra's men's skin care line recently earned the "Seal of Recommendation" from the Skin Cancer Foundation. The organization reviews submitted products to see how well they protect against ultraviolet rays.
Jafra vice president and chief scientific officer Pragna Chakravarti says that the seal helps consumers determine which products promote safety.
"Consumers want to protect their skin from sun damage, but they cannot always determine which products will provide them with the best benefits," said Chakravarti.
Using appropriate products and safety precautions when outside can help reduce a person's chances of developing skin cancer and having to pay more for life insurance.
