Medicare recipients to get discounted prescriptions next year

Posted On Fri, September 24, 2010

Today marks an important day in the history of the healthcare system. Several new provisions under the Affordable Care Act are now in effect.

Health insurance companies are no longer allowed to deny children coverage because of a pre-existing condition, and adult children are allowed to stay on their parents' health insurance plan until their 26th birthday.

There is good news for the country's senior citizens as well. Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius have announced that next year, Medicare beneficiaries who fall in the coverage gap will get a 50 percent discount on prescription drugs.

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrator Dr. Donald Berwick says seniors will see improved care under the new laws.

"Most Medicare prescription drug plan premiums will remain stable next year and beneficiaries will find there are clearer plan options and many plans that can help them save even more - like those plans that are offering benefits that help fill the donut hole."

Earlier this year, a round of rebate checks was mailed to qualified seniors to help cover prescription medication expenses.
