Medicare may be frozen by healthcare rulingPosted On Tue, May 8, 2012
If the Affordable Care Act is considered unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court, those who are covered under Medicare could be affected directly, according to The Associated Press.
The Obama Administration informed the Supreme Court that if the act is considered unconstitutional, it could cause a significant disruption in payments for the program. This would include significant government burdens, and could increase errors and other problems with medical claims, the news source said. In addition, it would likely affect the previous two years of Medicare payments, which have been in line with the law, despite it not taking full effect until 2014.
"Medicare cannot turn on a dime," Don Berwick, the Obama Administration's first Medicare chief, told the news source. "I would not be surprised if there are delays and problems with payment flow. Medicare has dealt with sudden changes in payment before, but it is not easy."
If a person has a Medicare policy, and they are concerned that healthcare reform could jeopardize their coverage, it may be a good idea to look for other options. Comparing health insurance quotes may help to find an affordable plan.
