Medical costs high for some procedures

Posted On Tue, April 10, 2012

Change Healthcare recently released a report showing that preventive procedures for consumers can cost vastly different amounts, with some differing by as much as 700 percent.

The study noted that procedures such as colonoscopies, mammographies, pap smears and diabetes tests can range in price significantly. This is due for many reasons, including the location of the office the procedure is taking place, as well as if it is done at a clinic, hospital or doctor's office. In addition, if a venue is used specifically for a procedure, the prices can be different.

"I wasn't surprised that there was variability, but the degree of variability surprised me," Doug Ghertner, president of Change Healthcare, told USA Today. "The absolute dollars for colonoscopies were pretty big."

In order to ensure the best opportunity for inexpensive medical procedures, it may be a good plan to find an insurance policy that is as strong as possible. By comparing health insurance rates, a person may find what they need to in order to be comfortable if a large procedure is needed.
