May is Building Safety MonthPosted On Thu, May 12, 2011
With an array of environmental disasters occurring around the world that have affected millions of homes, it is only fitting that the month of May is Building Safety Month.
President Barack Obama made the formal announcement recently, saying that homebuilders should put a renewed focus on "implementing effective standards and codes that sustain safe and resilient structures."
The non-profit organization that's in charge of the initiative, the International Code Council Foundation, says that each week in the month of May has a building safety theme. The first week is devoted to energy and green building, the second to disaster safety and risk avoidance, the third to fire awareness and the fourth to backyard safety.
Home insurance groups like the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety say that people may think adding protection to their home can be a costly proposition, but Julie Rochman, IBHS president and CEO, says that's often not the case.
"Post-catastrophe field research over many decades, as well as recent testing conducted at the multi-hazard IBHS Research Center prove that there are many effective ways to reduce property damage from natural disasters that can be affordable and, in some cases, free."
