Massachusetts Division of Insurance revises claims estimates

Posted On Fri, June 17, 2011

The Massachusetts Division of Insurance revised the number of claims residents submitted after a devastating tornado tore through portions of the state on the same day hurricane season began.

According to the Associated Press, approximately 8,200 insurance claims were filed, totaling $140 million. Earlier this month, the MDI put claim totals at 5,000, with a cost estimate of $90 million.

The AP reports that the brunt of the claims filed were home insurance related, totaling 4,200 and $120 million of the total. Approximately $15 million was taken up by 3,700 auto insurance claims and 200 businesses filed $5 million worth of commercial property insurance claims.

On June 1, more than a dozen towns in Massachusetts were affected by the tornado, most of the damage centering around Springfield, which is located in the southern portion of the state. The last time a twister touched down in the Bay State was in July 2008.

Tornadoes have been particularly prevalent in 2011, as insurers have received thousands of home insurance claims. Forecasters say the season starts in April and ends in July.
