Massachusetts celebrates high health insurance coverage ratesPosted On Wed, December 15, 2010
It was a day of celebration for lawmakers and healthcare advocates in Massachusetts. The Patrick-Murray Administration delivered news no other state can claim - 98 percent of Bay State residents have health insurance.
In 2006, the state made it mandatory for residents to have health insurance. Four years later, almost everyone has complied.
Massachusetts Business Roundtable executive director Alan Macdonald says there is now another issue the state must tackle.
"Massachusetts is now in a position to focus on healthcare capacity and cost issues, which we are as well-prepared and determined to do as any other state in the nation," says Macdonald.
Coverage levels in Massachusetts differ from those found across the country. A Gallup poll from earlier this year noted that rates vary depending on income and age.
According to the poll, young adults are more likely than any other age group to be uninsured. With healthcare reform, such findings may change. Adult children are now allowed to stay on their parents' plan until age 26 if they are not offered benefits elsewhere.
