Many young drivers texting in the carPosted On Thu, May 10, 2012
Consumer Reports recently conducted a study which revealed that a large portion of young drivers text behind the wheel, despite most noting that the practice is dangerous.
The study noted that close to 80 percent of young drivers between the ages of 16 and 21 believe that texting or using other services on their cell phone is a dangerous practice. However, 29 percent said they did text while driving in the past month. In addition, 47 percent said they used the phone without a headset in the last 30 days. This was noted to be a dangerous idea by nearly two-thirds of those polled.
"Our survey showed that while far too many young people are driving while distracted, they are less likely to do so when their parents, friends, or siblings set a good example," said Rik Paul, Consumer Reports Auto Editor. "We encourage everyone to stop the car in a safe place if they need to use a cell phone. And if they’re riding with a driver using a handheld phone, ask him or her to put it down and stop gambling with their safety."
More than 60 percent of those polled said they stopped driving while distracted due to the dangers that occurred, the report added. In addition, 40 percent said that their state bans the use of phones, while 28 percent said a family member told them to stop.
While a parent and their family may be safe drivers, not every person on the road takes such care. Due to this, it could be a good plan to ensure that all family members are covered when taking to the streets. Looking at a group of auto insurance quotes may help to find the right plan that also has low auto insurance rates.
