Many Texas youth remain uninsured

Posted On Tue, April 10, 2012

A report from the Center of Public Policy Priorities showed that more than 1 million Texas children have no health insurance plan, according to The Associated Press.

The annual Kids Count survey showed that 90 percent of children who are insured are in a healthy state, while only 58 percent are thought to be healthy if they don't have health insurance. In addition, close to 40 percent of moms in the state of Texas don't have enough prenatal care and this showed, as one in every seven children were born premature, the news source noted.

"A large percentage of those kids will end up in the emergency room as their primary source of care, which is hugely inefficient and ridiculously expensive," Dr. Skip Brown, a medical professor and director of a pediatrics center at the University of Texas Medical Branch, told the news source. "When you go to the emergency department, those guys are not there to be primary-care providers."

Parents who want to ensure their families are insured may want to compare health insurance quotes. It is important to be insured, and it could prevent more debilitating expenses later on if someone does fall seriously ill.
