Many people have poor oral health

Posted On Mon, July 23, 2012

The American Dental Association revealed that a large portion of people do not practice good oral habits.

The report found that the average American only managed a "D" when it came to their own oral health. Questions in the survey were answered with a "true" or "false" and touched many subjects. These included that nine in 10 Americans thought they should brush after each meal, which is incorrect. The ADA said that in order to improve oral health, brushing twice daily is best.

In addition, nearly two-thirds of those surveyed thought that changing a toothbrush twice per year was a good practice, the report said. Actually, it is important for people to get a new toothbrush every three months. Another 75 percent of those asked were unsure of when to take a child to the dentist for the first time. It is necessary to do this before a child turns one year old.

Nearly 60 percent did not know germs that cause cavities could be passed on by people, the report noted. Another four in five thought that sugar is the reason cavities form, which is untrue. Germs actually cause them, as they eat the sugar and leave acid behind.

"The results of the survey were quite shocking and really show how important it is for people to become more involved in their own oral health," said Dr. William Calnon, president of the ADA. "Oral health is a critical part of overall health."

Because oral health can have such a significant effect on a person's total well-being, taking care of these issues are necessary. However, if a person has a problem, it is important to visit a doctor to get the proper care. If they don't have the proper care policy, comparing health insurance quotes online may help get them what they need.
