Many gym members detest New Year's resolution timePosted On Fri, January 4, 2013
While January may be one of the most common months that Americans commit to losing weight, it's also the time of year that gym rats tend to dread.
According to a new poll conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin.com, more than half of current health club members - 56 percent - can't stand the New Year's resolution crowd, as the increased number of members often forces them to wait for equipment, making their workouts less than ideal.
Longtime health club members may not have to wait that long, though. The discount website notes that one in every 10 U.S. adults that signed up for a membership will likely quit before the year's out. In fact, polls show that 80 percent of those who quit do so within five months. Of these, 19 percent do so in January or February.
Jackie Warrick, president and chief savings officer at CouponCabin.com, noted that some people may quit because it's too much of an expense for their budgets. More than half of those polled said they spent around $30 per month last year for fitness-related expenses.
Individuals contemplating quitting may want to stick it out. Some providers offer special discounted insurance rates based upon whether policyholders have a gym membership.
