Many families dealing with high medical debt

Posted On Mon, March 19, 2012

The Consumer Watchdog Campaign recently cited statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which showed one in five families are in significant debt due to medical bills, which needs to be changed by lowering health insurance rates.

A total of 16 percent of Americans with non-Medicare or Medicaid plans had great difficulty paying their medical bills, according to the report. In addition, 6 percent noted not being able to pay for them at all. The campaign is attempting to get insurance providers to justify all rate hikes in the state of California with regulators. This is something that is common in many places in the United States.

"When one in five Americans are in medical debt it's clear that we're not doing enough to make health insurance affordable," said Carmen Balber with the Consumer Watchdog Campaign. "Soon, federal law will require every American to have insurance, but nothing controls what health insurers can charge."

Those who are afraid of falling into medical debt may want to get a better healthcare plan. This may be easier by comparing health insurance quotes.
