Many Americans looking for healthier drink options

Posted On Fri, June 15, 2012

A recent survey completed jointly by the Yale Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity, Interlex Communications and the Center for Science in the Public Interest showed that many Americans think sugary drinks are not good if a person plans to lead a healthy life, but many are not sure what would be classified as one of these beverages.

Approximately half of those asked said they would like to cut down the number of drinks they consume that are high in sugar, the report explained. Close to 60 percent of those polled said that companies that sell such beverages contribute to obesity issues in the U.S. More than half explained that they felt both young people and minorities receive a large amount of marketing from these companies.

"This report's findings are critical as they, for the first time, show the consumer's perspective and attitudes on 'sugary drink' marketing and messaging,"  said Rudy Ruiz, president and CEO of Interlex Communications. "It is critical for us to understand how these messages impact and resonate with the consumer in our efforts to educate them about healthier options."

Approximately 90 percent noted that companies that sell such products do not care for the health of their customers, the report added.

It may be a good plan for consumers who already take measures to eat and drink healthy to also look for ways to make sure they have the proper access to care. Looking for multiple health insurance quotes may help a person find the exact policy that they need. This could also help those who are dealing with problems related to high sugar intake, such as obesity, as they may be able to find a physician who can properly instruct them on improving their diet.
