Long-term cancer costs can differ from short-term solution expenses

Posted On Tue, August 31, 2010

When a person receives a cancer diagnosis, the cost of treatment should be the last thing on their mind. Patients should be more concerned about receiving the best care possible. This, unfortunately, doesn't always happen.

Opting for less-expensive cancer treatments may not save patients money in the long run. In fact, some forms of treatment may actually prove to be more expensive in the end.

Recent research from the American Cancer Society looked at treatment costs for prostate cancer. The researchers found that while hormonal therapy had the second lowest initial costs, after five years the treatment proved to be most expensive.

Such findings highlight the importance of carefully researching all options before selecting a form of treatment. Each individual's circumstances are different, so one form of treatment may be ideal for one patient, but not for another.

Research has shown that those who are obese are more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer in its more advanced stages, making it more difficult to treat. In addition to obesity, older men and African-Americans are at an increased risk of developing the disease.

Those who are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer may want to consider purchasing life insurance early on. Funds from a life insurance policy can help recoup costs associated with cancer.ADNFCR-2297-ID-19930834-ADNFCR
