Interpreters may help reduce emergency room wait times

Posted On Fri, July 30, 2010

Research shows that having specially trained interpreters in the emergency room can have multiple benefits for health care providers and patients.

In a study where some patients had access to an interpreter with medical training, those who had the interpreter were four times more likely to be satisfied with the experience than those who didn't.

"Professional interpreters can improve efficiency and throughput in the ER and can shorten overall length of stay, an important consideration in view of Press Ganey's recent report showing a new high in the average amount of time people are spending in the ER," says vice chair of the department of emergency medicine at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and study co-author Robert Eisenstein.

Using the same interpreter throughout the emergency room visit helps create a bond and ensure that important pieces of information aren't left out, Eisenstein said.

In the report by health care research group Press Ganey, their research found that the average person waited four hours and seven minutes in an emergency room for care last year.ADNFCR-2297-ID-19915338-ADNFCR
