Insurance organization reminds homeowners not to underestimate thunderstorms' destructive powersPosted On Thu, April 21, 2011
Because they're so common, thunderstorms don't get the kind of media coverage that the less frequent tornadoes and earthquakes. But with the prevalence of environmental disasters occurring around the country in recent months, the Insurance Information Institute is reminding homeowners that thunderstorms can be every bit as threatening to someone's property.
In fact, according to the III, the insurance industry has paid $30 billion since 2008 in home insurance claims for people whose property was damaged due to lightning.
"The recent devastation across multiple states demonstrates the need for everyone to prepare for severe weather," said Jeanne M. Salvatore, senior vice president and consumer spokesperson for the III. "No matter where you live, you need to have the right amount and type of insurance to protect yourself financially."
Unlike flood insurance, which usually has to be purchased separately, standard home insurance coverage usually includes damage related to thunderstorms. With lightning striking the U.S. 25 million times per year, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, it's little wonder the insurance industry pays so much in claims.
