Insurance experts offer homeowners safety tipsPosted On Fri, June 3, 2011
As communities around the country struggle to pick up the pieces after tornadoes ravaged their properties, experts with the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety hope to minimize damage as much as possible in the future for homeowners by providing them with some helpful tips.
"Tornadoes move very quickly and pack tremendously destructive power, as we have seen too often in devastated communities in several states this spring," said Julie Rochman, IBHS president and CEO. "However, as people build new - or rebuild destroyed - homes in tornado-prone areas, they should know that there are steps they can take to better protect their families and possessions from future windstorms."
Among the things Rochman said new homeowners should consider doing to further fortify their properties is strengthening the connections between roof and walls and the ground floor and foundation. In short, to avoid filing a home insurance claim, Rochman said homeowners should have a property that goes above and beyond building code standards.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, 2006 to 2008 represented the costliest period for home insurance losses resulting from tornadoes.
