Insurance company informs consumers of fire hazardsPosted On Mon, October 10, 2011
A recent report from The Hanover Insurance Group warned consumers of the precautions that should be taken when minimizing fire hazards.
It is important that smoke detectors are on each floor of a dwelling, as four in 10 house fires are in buildings with no device to sense smoke. In addition, having an evacuation contingency plan is a good precaution, the company noted. Keeping an eye on open flames in the house will lessen the chance of a freak situation occurring, as well.
"Even a small fire can devastate a family and the statistics are sobering," said Mark Desrochers, president of personal lines at The Hanover. "According to the Insurance Information Institute, some 384,000 residential fires annually kill 2,600 people and injure 13,000. The good news is that with some basic precautions fires can be prevented."
Consumers may want to ensure that fire hazards are at a minimum in their home, as this is the best way of prevention. But in case a bad situation does occur, it could be a good idea to be proactive and examine home insurance quotes that offer fire coverage.
