Insurance companies raising rates for teen girls

Posted On Wed, June 2, 2010

For decades the insurance companies have always charged more to cover teenage boys than teenage girls, but new studies are reversing that trend.

A report from KELO-TV in Sioux Falls, South Dakota said that the rates for girls could finally approach or even equal those for boys of the same age. The report cited an Allstate Insurance Survey that said 48 percent of teenage girls admitted to speeding and more than half admitting to texting while driving, and both numbers were considerably lower for teenage boys.

The report said that a policy for a 17-year-old good student driving a relatively new Honda Civic would cost $58 for boys and $50 for girls, and quoted a local insurance agent as saying there would have been a difference of about $30 between the boy's and girl's monthly payments just 10 years ago.

The article also said that while accidents are the leading cause of death for teens, the rate of accidents has actually declined in recent years.

A report in last week's Lancaster (Pennsylvania) Intelligencer Journal said that another Allstate survey found that teen girls are "taking more risks in all aspects of their lives."ADNFCR-2297-ID-19814788-ADNFCR
