Installing a pool? Additional home insurance may be neededPosted On Fri, July 9, 2010
With warm weather and summer months ahead, people are looking for ways to cool off and enjoy the longer days. Many homeowners with children install swimming pools to help entertain kids during the hot summer days.
However, while pools can be fun, they can also pose major risks.
"Pools offer a great way to keep cool and even get some really good exercise, but they can also be dangerous, so it is important to educate yourself about water safety," says Insurance Information Institute senior vice president and consumer spokesperson Jeanne Salvatore.
Sadly, the risks associated with having a swimming pool include injury and even death. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that three children die from drowning every day.
Installing a fence that is at least 4 feet high around the pool is a safety feature that may help prevent children from getting a swimming area unsupervised, says the CDC. They also recommend other security measures such as locks and alarms.
In addition to installing a fence, other steps need to be taken when getting a pool. The III encourages homeowners to talk to their insurance agent if they decide to build a pool, as additional insurance coverage may need to be purchased.
