Indiana to participate in earthquake drill

Posted On Thu, January 12, 2012

Indiana officials recently warned its residents to be prepared for an earthquake by encouraging those who live there to participate in a drill, according to the Indianapolis Star.

The state is one of many taking part in the "Great Central U.S. Shakeout," which occurs on February 7, at 11:15 a.m. The region is due for a large earthquake, as it has been more than 100 years since the largest incident in the state's history.

"When you're preparing for an earthquake, you're also preparing for the other types of emergencies and disasters Hoosiers face each year," John Erickson, spokesman for the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. "You're preparing for tornadoes. You're preparing for winter storms. Things that apply to earthquakes will also apply to other situations."

Due to the uncertainty of natural disasters, consumers may want to know what types of incidents are common in the area they live. If their current plan does not cover such disasters, comparing home insurance rates may be a good way to find something affordable that gives sufficient coverage.
