Important to prepare for summer storms

Posted On Tue, June 5, 2012

The Property Casualty Insurers Association of America informed consumers who live in areas prone to hurricane activity to be ready for the storms that often hit during the warm months.

PCI noted that it is important to have a disaster plan in place when dealing with major storms. By knowing what the protocol will be, it can help to make a person and their family better protected and safer.

"The insurance industry is well prepared and ready to help families and communities all along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts prepare for and recover from these devastating events," said Christopher Hackett, PCI’s director, personal lines policy. "We urge all coastal residents to take preparation for the hurricane season seriously."

It is wise to make small repairs and maintenance to the home periodically, as needed, the report explained. This will help keep the home in good shape and lessen the chances of significant damage during a storm. Furthermore, it is smart to board up all windows and put away all outside items that could damage the house during heavy winds. This includes putting chairs, grills and other lawn items inside the home.

Homeowners may want to take further measures to make sure that they have the best plan possible. A person can do this efficiently by comparing home insurance quotes with their current policy. That way, they will ensure that they not only have a plan that will protect them from storm damage, but they also would have it for the best price available.

It is important for anyone purchasing insurance to do it in advance, the report added. This is because it can take approximately one month to enact the policy. Waiting until days before a storm would not be wise because of this.
