III reminds homeowners of the dangers of lightningPosted On Wed, June 15, 2011
With devastating tornadoes and earthquakes receiving much of the media's attention, the Insurance Information Institute says the thunderstorm may not be getting short shrift.
The III says it shouldn't though, as according to the Lightning Protection Institute, lightning strikes the earth approximately 30 million times every year, injuring as many as a thousand people.
"Most people are very apathetic about protecting themselves from lightning," said Jeanne Salvatore, senior vice president and consumer spokesperson for III. "And the average person often confuses lightning myths with lightning facts."
What III says homeowners should be clear about is the damage lightning poses to properties, as home damage analysis estimates indicate there were more than 213,000 home insurance claims relating to lightning last year, a 15 percent rise from 2009.
III and the LPI says people can prepare for thunder and lightning storms by practicing common sense and going indoors when one hears rumbles of thunder and perhaps investing in a lightning protection system for a residence.
Home owners may also want to review their home insurance plans. Lightning damage is traditionally covered under a standard policy.
