III offers tips for what to do when the unexpected happensPosted On Fri, March 25, 2011
With the frequency of earthquakes in the Pacific lately, many people may be wondering what they would do if their home or place of business was damaged.
With this in mind, the Insurance Information Institute has recently compiled a list for what homeowners should do when disaster strikes.
III says a detailed plan should be established so everyone knows what his or her responsibility is when there's an emergency. Similar to fire evacuation drills, the plan should be practiced now and again.
Another disaster-preparedness tip from the III is to compile a list of contacts. In addition to extended family members' addresses and phone numbers, the list should also include phone numbers for the local fire department and police.
Other tips offered by the III include having portable power supplies on hand, keeping duplicate records on file in a separate location and making sure alternative housing is arranged.
While home insurance protects people from financial ruin when the unexpected happens, homeowners may assume their policy covers all disasters. That's rarely the case, however, as most policies require separate plans for damage related to floods and earthquakes.
