III: Insure your bicycle before hitting the streetsPosted On Tue, June 5, 2012
With summer on the doorstep, many people are leaving their vehicles in the driveway and biking to their destinations. But before cyclists take to the road, the Insurance Information Institute says they may want to insure their bike if they haven't already done so.
Jeanne Salvatore, senior vice president of public affairs for the III, said she has witnessed what can happen when people don't insure their bicycles.
"As both a cyclist and an insurance educator, I know first-hand the importance of basic cycling safely and properly insuring your bike," said Salvatore. "It is heartbreaking when someone spends months picking out their perfect bike only to have it stolen the first day they use it. Fortunately, with the proper insurance you can at least replace the bicycle and get back out on the road quickly."
As a general rule, bicycles are covered by home insurance under the personal property section of the policy, the Institute notes. Most plans carry $100,000 to $300,000 of liability protection but policyholders can usually get more if they so choose. If they do increase their coverage, they may want to ask their agent how this will affect their insurance rates.
