IBHS suggests ways to avoid wildfire damagePosted On Fri, April 20, 2012
A recent report from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety noted that there are many ways a person can ensure their home is at the lowest risk possible of a wildfire.
The report noted that it is important to keep vegetation controlled, while also keeping up with maintenance around a person's property and on their home. Florida has a higher risk of wildfires, but if homeowners keep their gutters clean, cover vents and seal doors they can help prevent their house from being affected. In addition, a five-foot area between vegetation and the home can go a long way toward achieving this.
"Florida is one the few states that has a year-round wildfire season, and current drought conditions - particularly in the Panhandle - have heightened the wildfire risk, making preparation all the more important," said Julie Rochman, president and CEO of IBHS.
Consumers who have disaster insurance on their property, but do not have an up-to-date home insurance plan, may benefit from examining new options. Many home insurance quotes are available, and these options can make sure a family's dwelling is covered in the event of an unforseen situation.
