IBHS: Building codes important for homes exposed to disastersPosted On Mon, January 16, 2012
An analysis of the residential building codes for homes on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts was recently released, and showed the importance of keeping up with minimum requirements to ensure homeowners and their families are safe.
The report was released by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, and showed the importance of having buildings up to code, especially in areas that are frequently battered by hurricanes.
"The report goes beyond just evaluating each state’s code system," said Julie Rochman, president and chief executive officer for IBHS. "The report offers each state the detailed information and tools it needs to improve its building code process to better protect its citizens. It also gives interested citizens useful information so that they can understand the need for, and demand, better building codes."
Consumers who live in hurricane-prone areas may need more than having their homes up to code. Having sufficient insurance is important as well, as this could help keep a person's family financially safe. By comparing home insurance quotes, a person can find a plan that is right for them.
