Hurricane season brings relief to property owners, home insurance companiesPosted On Wed, December 2, 2009
According to a recent report from the Insurance Information Institute, 2009 was one of the calmest years regarding hurricanes the country has seen in more than 10 years.
This year, the III reports, only nine named storms formed in the Atlantic Basin from June 1 to November 30, which is the lowest total seen since 1997. Furthermore, only three hurricanes formed from these storms, also the lowest seen since 1997.
"The 2009 season is a welcome respite from 2008, when hurricanes Gustav and Ike disrupted hundreds of thousands of lives in Louisiana and Texas, and caused $14.65 billion in insured losses," Dr. Robert Hartwig, an economist and president of the I.I.I., said.
Despite the fact that this year was light on hurricanes, consumers who live in areas that may be threatened by the storms should still make sure they have the proper home insurance. Having proper home insurance would including making sure they have proper flood insurance.
Furthermore, home owners may want to contact their home insurance provider to see if they can get discounts on their policies for storm-proofing their houses.
