Hurricane Earl highlights need for homeowners insurancePosted On Fri, September 3, 2010
A number of homeowners along the East Coast are preparing themselves for Hurricane Earl. The potential damage the hurricane could bring highlights the importance of having homeowners insurance.
A hurricane watch has been issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Weather Service for some communities in North Carolina. Other coastal communities are closely keeping their eyes on the hurricane's path.
Insurance Information Institute president and economist Dr. Robert Hartwig says everyone needs to be cautious of the hurricane.
"Virtually no part of the eastern and southern U.S. coastline is immune from the threat of severe storm systems," says Hartwig. "While Atlantic hurricanes rarely make landfall along the East Coast, they have enormous financial repercussions for multiple states when they do."
The III advises people to review their homeowners insurance before they have to file a claim. It's important to know exactly what type of insurance a person has and what items will be covered. Taking inventory of one's belongings also helps ensure the right amount of insurance is purchased and may be helpful if a claim needs to be filed.
