HSC: Sprinklers can help with fire preparednessPosted On Mon, October 26, 2009
One of the major reasons people may have home insurance is to protect against damage caused by fires.
However, a recent survey from the Home Safety Council showed that only 37 percent of respondents have taken "any action" in order to prepare for a house fire. The council is joining with the National Fire Sprinkler Association in order to encourage people to be ready for home fires.
The two groups have stated that people should do three things in order to prepare for a house fire. One of those is making sure every floor of the house has a working smoke detector. People should also establish an escape route, which would include having two evacuation points from every room of the house. They are also encouraging people to consider installing sprinkler systems in their homes.
"Fire sprinklers are available for homes, but too often people don't know to ask for them when they build or move," Meri-K Appy, president of the HSC, said.
Recently the country held Fire Prevention Week, with this year's theme focusing on cooking fires and preventing burns. The U.S. Fire Administration noted that whenever people are cooking, they should make sure to stay in the kitchen while stovetops are on.
