How to file a flood insurance claim

Posted On Wed, April 28, 2010

Areas around the country, particularly the Northeast and the Midwest, have suffered severe damage from recent flooding.

The National Flood Insurance Program was reinstated last week after a suspension during a Congressional break. Consumers should know that only authorized insurance agents can offer NFIP policies to homeowners.

Filing for a flood insurance claim in order to repair damage is a necessary step every homeowner must take. The damage should be reported as soon as possible so a claims adjuster can conduct an inspection, estimate repair costs, and send the insurance company the estimated repair cost for approval.

Some insurance will cover both building and content loss, and a proof of loss is necessary for the insurance claims process to occur. Photos of the damage and a list of all items should be included as well. Policy holders are able to negotiate the terms of the claims report through an additional damages claim if they feel an inadequate report was made. However, the proof of loss must be given to the NFIP within 60 days of the event.

The most recent state to receive FEMA assistance due to flooding was New York.ADNFCR-2297-ID-19749092-ADNFCR
