House fires a problem during Halloween season

Posted On Fri, October 14, 2011

A recent report from the National Fire Protection Association warned consumers about the dangers of house fires during the latter part of October, due to the candles often used at Halloween celebrations.

The report noted that many precautions can be made to ensure that the home is safe from fire. If a person wants to light a jack-o-lantern, it could be a good idea to put a flashlight or electric candle in the pumpkin instead of an open flame. Also, if a standard candle is used do not put items such as flowers, cornstalks and other dried plantlife anywhere near flames, as they can catch fire very easily.

"It's an exciting holiday especially for the kids but if precautions are not taken, scary things can happen," said Lorraine Carli, vice president of communications for NFPA. "Candle decorations and flowing costumes create an extra risk of fire."

Consumers may want to ensure that their home insurance coverage is sufficient in light of this information. If it is not, it could be a good idea to follow in the footsteps of many Americans and look for multiple insurance quotes online and see which is the best fit for the person's family.
