Honda Accord tops list of stolen vehiclesPosted On Thu, September 23, 2010
Every year, thousands of motor vehicles are stolen from unsuspecting owners. Just under 800,000 vehicles were reported stolen last year, according the FBI's Uniform Crime Report.
While the statistic actually marks a decline in the number of stolen vehicles, falling to the lowest number in more 20 years, a loss of a vehicle still affects a large number of people.
Last year, the 1994 Honda Accord was the most stolen vehicle. The 1995 Honda Civic and the 1991 Toyota Camry round out the top three.
National Insurance Crime Bureau president and CEO Joe Wehrle says a lot of stolen vehicles end up being dismantled with their parts being sold.
"Through the end of August this year there were 97,655 vehicles that were listed as stolen and not yet recovered," says Wehrle. "Of that number, only 38 percent had some kind of insurance coverage. So there are a lot of vehicles out there that are being stolen and the owner is left holding the bag with no car and no money to buy another one."
Owning a vehicle that is sought after by thieves may make someone's auto insurance premiums increase. However, people can install anti-theft devices to help lower rates and keep their car safe.
