Homeowners will receive help just in time for wildfire seasonPosted On Fri, April 30, 2010
On Wednesday, it was announced that the California Fire Alliance will receive a Good Neighbor Citizenship Grant in the amount of $50,000 from State Farm Insurance.
The Alliance's public education campaign - Take Responsibility - will use the grant to help establish the program and distribute materials for it. California homeowners, especially those that reside in the wildland urban interface - an area where development and structures interact with undeveloped wildland - should take precautions in order to prevent wildfires and the losses that come with them.
Randy Moore, Pacific Southwest regional forester and California Fire Alliance chairman, said that "raising awareness about 100 feet of clean, open space is a critical step in limiting the devastating effects of wildfires. The Good Neighbor Citizenship Grant from State Farm will assist in our efforts to raise awareness among homeowners as the peak of wildfire season begins."
Homeowners taking preventative measures can protect their homes, loved ones, pets, and even firefighters from the devastation that can come with wildfires. A few simple things residents can do include trimming and separating shrubs and plants; removing dried grass and leaves, dead shrubs, and fallen branches from 100 feet around a home; removing ladder fuels; and clearing around the base of a home so that five feet of space is free, according to the California Fire Alliance.
