Homeowners urged to inform agents of expensive giftsPosted On Fri, December 17, 2010
With the biggest holiday of the year just days away, many people have a number of expensive electronics and presents stored in their homes. There are steps homeowners should take to keep their valuables safe.
Farmers Insurance recommends making sure all doors and windows are locked when no one is home. Additionally, the insurer recommends not placing wrapped gifts in a highly visible area. Wrapped presents can be alluring to thieves.
Farmers senior vice president of home product management Jeff Reinig says people should contact their home insurance agent if expensive items will be kept in a home.
"Many people will be receiving wonderful gifts this year - including high-dollar items - which would be difficult to replace if not properly insured," said Reinig. "We want to remind everyone that keeping your insurance agent informed about your new gifts will help consumers, should an unfortunate event occur."
Depending on policy type, homeowners insurance can protect a house as well as belongings inside. It's important to discuss plans in detail with an agent to ensure one completely understands what is and isn't covered by a policy.
